The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office is investigating the deadly collision, which happened around 6:25 p.m. Friday, March 7, on Addison Road South in Capitol Heights, officials said.
According to investigators, a District Heights Police Department officer initially stopped an Infiniti SUV in the 6000 block of Marlboro Pike before the driver suddenly sped away.
The officer lost sight of the Infiniti and alerted others to be on the lookout for the fleeing driver, authorities said.
Moments later, a District Heights officer and a Capitol Heights officer spotted the SUV and attempted to pull it over again. Shortly after, the driver of the Infiniti slammed into four vehicles in the 1200 block of Addison Road South.
The driver was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A woman and a juvenile inside one of the cars struck by the Infiniti were also rushed to the hospital, where the juvenile was pronounced dead, investigators said.
The woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Others involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and remained on the scene, authorities said.
The investigation remains active, and officials are reviewing body-worn camera footage from officers involved in the pursuit. Anyone with information is asked to contact the IID at (410) 576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
